Mount Baker wrestlers Ashlee Phy and Katie Newgard helped the Mountaineers to a girls’ state title last month, and they have found it hard to stay away from the mats since.

The pair qualified to wrestle in the United States Girls Wrestling Association National Championships, which will be held March 29-30 at Livonia, Mich.

They each earned the right to compete on the national level with successful tournaments earlier this month at the Washington USGWA Girls’ Wrestling State Championship March 8 in Ridgefield and the Oregon USGWA Girls’ Wrestling Championship Open a day later in Portland. Phy finished first in her weight class in both tournaments, while Newgard finished third in Washington and second at the Oregon Open.

Fellow Mount Baker wrestlers Chloe Graffwallner, Lanay Newgard, Samantha Gallegos, Elena Gallegos and Emily Gallegos travelled and competed with them in the Washington and Oregon tournaments, while Santos Gallegos coached the group.

A spaghetti dinner is scheduled for tonight from 4 p.m. to closing at the Blue Mountain Grill in Acme to help raise money to cover the travel expenses to Michigan for Phy, Newgard and Gallegos. Willing sponsors and supporters may also make contributions at any Industrial Credit Union branch in the Ashlee Phy Account.

ALL-STAR SELECTIONS

Two Whatcom County football players were selected to participate in the Class 4A/3A East-West All-Star Football Game. Squalicum linebacker/

senior

tight end Nick Wallace and Ferndale’s linebacker/offensive lineman Kyle Harbine will represent the West.

Selections were made by the Washington State Football Coaches Association and were released Wednesday.

The game will be played July 3 at Central Valley Stadium in Spokane. Bothell’s Tom Bainter will be the coach for the West squad, while Gonzaga Prep’s Dave Carson will lead the East.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Squalicum’s NWC-opening varsity baseball game against Anacortes has been moved from Squalicum High School to Anacortes and moved up one half-hour to a 4 p.m. first pitch.

It is the third time the Storm have had a site change this year.

The season opener against Mount Baker, which was also slated to be played at the high school, was pushed back a day an moved to Deming because of the rainy weather last week.

Squalicum athletic director Mike McKee said the two moves were made because of major renovations on the high school field last fall. A portion of the outfield still needs to be seeded and rolled, and the recent rains have made that task impossible.

The Storm also had Monday’s game against Lynden, which was originally slated to be played at Joe Martin Field, moved to Lynden because of Monday’s rain.

SPEEDY REVERSAL

After failing to win a Northwest Conference boys’ soccer game last year, Mount Baker has made a quick turnaround.

The Mountaineers have won all three games so far this spring, including Tuesday’s impressive overtime conference- opening victory over Mount Vernon, one of the favorites to contend for the NWC title.

Senior Taesun Krishnek has played a big role in the Mountaineers’ early season success, scoring a goal in a season opening 3-0 victory over Lynden before recording two goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over Sedro-Woolley.

“Taesun is consistently a hard worker and has a knack for scoring goals at crucial moments in the game,” Mount Baker coach Jason Jorgensen said in an e-mail.

HALL OF FAME CONNECTIONS

Maggie Trimble, who was born in Blaine and went on to establish the girls’ tennis and

gymnastics at Auburn High School, was one of 11 to be selected for induction into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame this year.

Trimble, who served as president of the Washington High School Gymnastics Association in 1968 and was selected to the Washington State Gymnastics Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999, will be joined by former Burlington-Edison wrestling and football standout Cash Stone, who was selected for his coaching service at Mead.

Also in the Class of 2008 were R.A. Long wrestler Pat Connors, Snohomish football player Curt Marsh, Reardan volleyball, basketball and track athlete Aileen McManus, Moses Lake football player and wrestler Dan Strode, Roosevelt Fine Arts teacher Ruben Van Kempen, the DeSales baseball program, Wilbur volleyball coach Chuck Wyborney, Okanogan County official Clyde Pock and WIAA administrator Walt Thorp.
