The Nooksack Valley girls’ basketball team didn’t start out well against Friday Harbor but found its rhythm en route to 51-32 victory at home on Monday.

“We got off to a bit of a slow start, missed a lot of easy shots in the first,” Pioneers coach Shane Wichers said in a phone interview of the 6-4 advantage after one quarter, “but we came alive in the second quarter. We tell the kids to relax and keep shooting and it will go in.”

Nooksack Valley’s Austen Beard led all scorers with 14 points and Amanda Te Velde and Danielle Way had eight apiece.

The Pioneers outrebounded Friday Harbor 40-23, and Wichers said Allison Johnson’s dominance on the boards was a big reason his team was successful.

“Allison Johnson had 11 rebounds — seven offensive — giving us second opportunities,” Wichers said. “That was huge for us.”

Nooksack Valley (8-4) gets back into Northwest Conference action as it hosts Lynden tonight at 7:30 p.m.
