The Nooksack Valley boys’ basketball team was tentative at the start of Monday’s game, not sure of an opponent it hasn’t seen this season. That led to a 16-11 Pioneers deficit after one quarter.

That’s all the time the Pioneers needed to figure out the Wolverines as they outscored Friday Harbor 46- 29 in the final three quarters in a 57-45 home win.

“We came out and didn’t have a good first quarter. We kind of felt them out in the first,” Nooksack Valley coach Tyler Mitchell said in a phone interview. “But the guys battled back and had a good second quarter, took the lead and never looked back.”

Nooksack Valley’s Rich Skillman led all scoreers with 21 points and had 12 rebounds and six assists in the win.

“Richie played well distributing the ball and played better than he has the last few games,” Mitchell said. “We tried to get him a little more involved. He does a lot of things for us.”

Dexter Beard had 13 points and Markus McLeod had 12 points, including three 3- pointers, for the Pioneers as they improve to 8-4 on the season.

Nooksack Valley plays next at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Lynden and hosts Burlington-Edison at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
