The Mount Baker girls’ basketball team fended off a fourth quarter rally from Sedro-Woolley and held on for a 66-64 victory — the Mountaineers’ first of the season — on Saturday at Deming.
The Mountaineers went into the fourth quarter up 58-38, but the Cubs rallied with a 26-8 final quarter, falling just short.
“It was a near tragedy,” Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview.
The Mountaineers were led by Brandi Anderson’s 21 points, Courtney VanBrocklin had 17 points and eight assists, and Nicole Buchanan added 12. Krischelle Zwiers led the team with four of its 10 steals in the game and Lauren Frey came up big on the boards with nine rebounds.

Leading the way for the Blackhawks was Sarah Brady who led all scorers with 13 points.
Lummi coach Ken Keys said in a phone interview that he was happy with the win.
“We still got to stick to the basics we’ve got some kinks to work out,” Keys said, “but we look real good.”

Ashley Honeycutt scored a game-high 18 points as the Golden Eagles on on the road.

WRESTLING
BAKER GIRLS FINISH STRONG
The Mount Baker girls’ wrestling team had an impressive showing at the Franklin Pierce Invite on Saturday.
Out of the 150 girls competing in the tournament the Mountaineers sent eight to the finals and came away with four champions.
Rosie Rosas (103 pounds), Katie Newgard (130) and Ashlee Phy all won championships by pin and Alex Lepper (135) won by a 15-0 technical fall.
Karina Rosas (112), Samantha Mount (119), Shanli Dillard (125) and Nicole Krogh (unlimited) all took home second place finishes.
The Baker girls’ team will be at Burlington-Edison on Tuesday.
