Rylan Hinkle scored the winning goal for Sehome’s boys’ soccer team in the 74th minute of a 5-4 victory against Ferndale on Thursday, April 30, at Ferndale High School.
The Mariners scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game. The first was scored by Isaac DeVange and the second by Zach Wanne.
Ferndale took a 3-2 lead in the 35th minute with a goal by Bailey Graf, but Sehome re-gained the lead after goals from Devan Trueb and Mason Rathkamp. Golden Eagles’ Joshua Seig, who scored two goals in the game, scored the game-tying goal in the 70th minute for a score of 3-3 before Hinkle scored the winning goal for Sehome.
“It was a tough game to wrap my head around a bit,” Ferndale coach Rigel Weis said in a phone interview. “We came out really flat defensively. After the two goals, the boys showed great character. I’m proud of the way they played the rest of the game.”
Sehome will take on Anacortes next at 6 p.m. Monday, May 4, on the road. Ferndale will take on Blaine next at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Pipeline Fields.
