Nooksack Valley’s boys’ soccer team kept on rolling with a 5-1 Northwest Conference win over Ferndale on Thursday, April 16, at Nooksack Valley. Luis Garcia scored a pair of goals to lead the Pioneers to the win.
“We started playing like we always do, trying to play strong at the beginning,” Nooksack Valley coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview. “I was hoping to score right away and we did. Then we scored a second one. After that they put some pressure eon us and that left gaps open.”
Ferndale’s goal was scored by Joshua Seig in the 28th minute, but Ferndale couldn’t find the net again. The goal came when Pioneers goalkeeper Tyson Thorp was trying to sub out to get looked at for a head injury, but the ref hadn’t called for the substitution so Thorp was caught out of position on the corner kick and Seig found the back of the net.
Brent Berends also scored a goal and added two assists for the Pioneers. David Flores and Levi VanWingerden also scored, and Julio Garcia added an assist.
Nooksack Valley hosts Mount Baker at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Pioneers’ final home game of the regular season.
