Nooksack Valley’s boys’ soccer team broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other and added a late insurance goal for a 4-1 win over Blaine on Monday, April 6, at Nooksack Valley Elementary in a Northwest Conference game.
Kyle Macy, David Flores, Leo Velazquez and William Kingma scored for the Pioneers. Rigoberto Gonzales had a pair of assists and Brent Berends and Luis Garcia each had one.
“I told the guys that Blaine is always aggressive against us and they were going to give us everything they have, so I want to see more shots on goal because all our shots had been on the keeper,” Nooksack Valley coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview of his halftime speech. “We had to get shots on net. If we scored once or twice more they would get frustrated and out of rhythm. David Flores had three goals he missed in the first half. His head was not in the game the first half. It could have been he felt pressure to score, so we told him to get his head together and he scored.”
Saul Magallon scored for the Borderites. Villalobos complemented Blaine goalkeeper Tristan Soto, saying his team could have had six more goals if it weren’t for Soto’s great play.
Never miss a local story.
