In a match between cross-town rivals, goalkeeper Hector Gutierrez scored two goals for Lynden’s boys’ soccer team and recorded a shutout in a 5-0 victory in a Northwest Conference match against Lynden Christian on Wednesday, Apirl 1, at Bender Fields.
“Hector does take our long distance free kicks,” Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. “He hit them perfect. I don’t know what else to say.”
For the Lions, it was the play of forward Nicolas Parris and midfielder Ernesto Zamora that got the team going. Parris was able to get an early goal off of a Zamora assist in the third minute and the duo netted another in the fourteenth minute.
“Nic had a huge game and Zamora had a hat trick of assists. LC is always a big game for us and today was a huge result for us,” Smiley said.
In the first 15 minutes Smiley said the Lyncs were competing right with Lynden in an evenly played match, despite what the score showed. But once the 20 minute mark ticked, the Lions started to pull away.
The Lions’ Girardo Quiroz struck a free kick that found the backside of the net in the 35th minute, assisting his own goal since he was the player who got fouled moments prior.
But it was the defense of the Lions that really stuck out to Smiley.
“I thought Alejandra (Huente) was fantastic in the back,” he said. “Ben Mulder took care of Cody Fransen. His job was to stop him from scoring and he did a good job. It was great to see.”
Lynden will take on Ferndale next at 4 p.m. Monday, April 6, on the road and Lynden Christian takes on Squalicum next at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, on the road.
