Sophomore midfielder Christina Funk’s goal with six minutes to go in regulation captured the game’s momentum for Sehome, and it seemed only a matter of time until the Mariners scored the game-winner in overtime, Sehome coach Andria Fountain said.
But the Sehome couldn’t find the back of the net, and Burlington-Edison took advantage in the shootout, as Sehome fell 2-1 in a Class 2A District Tournament third-or-fourth-place game Saturday, Nov. 8, at Shoreline Stadium.
“I didn’t think we played our best game, but I still feel like we were dominant,” Sehome coach Andria Fountain said in a phone interview. “The two five-minute overtimes, I thought we were going to do it. It’s amazing how fast five minutes go by.”
Burlington-Edison’s Edie Breckenridge opened the scoring in the 49th minute, and Funk scored off an assist from Andrea Zucchi in the 74th.
Fountain said the difference in the shootout was one save made by the Tigers’ keeper.
“They made all their shots, and we made four of ours,” Fountain said. “It’s nice to play in OT and go to a shootout when it’s not loser-out.”
Sehome will face either North Kitsap or Liberty in the first round of the Class 2A State Tournament.
