Lynden’s girls’ soccer team was amped up for its Northwest Conference opener, as it cruised to a 7-0 win over Mount Baker on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Bender Fields.
The Lions (2-0-2, 1-0-0 NWC) kicked things off in the sixth minute with the first of two Sierra Smith goals. It was followed by Jayme Smits’ first goal in the ninth minute. By halftime, the Lions were up 5-0.
“They really wanted to come out and make a statement,” Lions coach Carlos Melendez said in a phone interview. “We’ve had trouble finishing, we worked on it and they responded.”
Melendez gave credit to Baker (0-3-1, 0-1-0 NWC) for competing until the end and coming out strong in the second half.
Smith and Smits both ended with two goals, while Smits added an assist. Other scorers included Lexi Smiley — who also had three assists — Peyton Fullner and Lily Bogart.
Lynden plays Sehome on Thursday, Sept. 18, at Northwest Soccer Park. The Mountaineers play La Conner on Friday, Sept. 19, on the road.
