Ashley Quesada scored five goals and assisted on a sixth to lead Blaine’s girls’ soccer team to a 6-5 victory over Nooksack Valley on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Pipeline Fields.
Quesada scored the first four goals of the game in the 11th, 13th, 32nd and 42nd minutes. Makayah Veliz assisted on the first and third goals, Makenna Magner assisted on the second, and Caitlyn Sharp had the fourth assist.
“We’re starting to get our attacking combinations forward,” Blaine coach Kelly Tuski said in a phone interview. “We just started shooting the lights out.”
Nooksack Valley stormed back with three goals of its own. Tori VandeHoef scored the first and third goals in the 46th and 63rd minutes, and Courtney Haak had the middle goal in the 57th minute.
The Borderites were able to pull ahead with two more goals. The first was by Caylie Sharp, who was assisted by Quesada in the 67th minute, and Quesada added her fifth and final goal a minute later with the assist from Kaitlyn Diamond.
Nooksack Valley pulled to within one goal in the final minute on VandeHoef’s final goal, but couldn’t score in stoppage time to salvage a tie.
“Tori timed her run and had a really nice breakaway on the final goal,” Tuski said. “Nooksack has some girls I really enjoyed watching. Their attackers know how to move off of each other and find penetrating passes forward. Thankfully we had Tessa (Kelly) in goal stopping their advances.”
Kelly also prevented the game from being a tie with a big stop on a penalty kick by VandeHoef, Tuski added.
Blaine will look for another win in its Northwest Conference opener at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Pipeline Fields against Burlington-Edison. Nooksack Valley opens the NWC season at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Nooksack Valley Elementary against Squalicum.
