Lynden Christian’s girls’ soccer team used a 78th minute goal to earn a 1-1 draw against rival Lynden on Thursday, Sept. 11, at Bender Fields.
The Lions opened scoring in the 12th minute on a Sierra Smith goal, and their forwards maintained pressure against the Lyncs’ back line.
“Lexi Smiley was so dangerous up top,” Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. “We had our hands full all day.”
It took another 66 minutes for Lynden Christian to sneak one past Lynden goalkeeper Emily Holt. The Lyncs’ Shaye Brandsma served up a cross into the box that found Kaitlyn Heeringa, who headed the ball into the net.
“Obviously Shaye and Kait did a good job, and Sara Dougan was a rock in the back again,” De Ruyter said. “I thought our ability to be resilient in the last third of the game and to dig deep was the difference.”
Lynden Christian plays next at noon, Saturday, Sept. 13, at Mount Baker. Lynden hosts Friday Harbor at noon, Saturday, Sept. 13, at Bender Fields.
