Jordin Bartel scored two goals to help Ferndale’s girls’ soccer team defeat Sehome 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 11, at Northwest Soccer Park.
Bartel scored first in the 45th minute, deflecting in a ball after she collided with Sehome goalkeeper Camryn Ranson and sweeper Ilana Pechthalt. Her second goal came in the 53rd minute, when a shot was deflected her way after a throw-in.
“She was in the right place at the right time,” Sehome coach Andria Fountain said in a phone interview. “Ferndale has a lot of speed up front, and they keep pressing. So if you get caught on your heels, you have to work hard in the back.”
Fountain was impressed with her defense’s ability to keep the Golden Eagles’ attack in check.
“My sweeper, Ilana Pechthalt, and defenders Katie Mindnich and Bryce Sherif did a good job shutting down the offense,” Fountain said. “They had a lot of plays that we shut down when there could have been more than two goals.”
Sehome will look to bounce back when it hosts Squalicum at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Civic Stadium. Ferndale plays next at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Oak Harbor.
