The Squalicum football team relied on a hot start to fend off a comeback bid from host Marysville-Pilchuck as the Storm won its 3A Wesco North opener 38-28 on Friday.
Triston Smith, once again, had a good night with multiple touchdowns, and quarterback Spencer Lloyd also chipped in multiple scores.
The Storm (3-0, 1-0) led 28-7 and then 35-14 at one point, before Marysville started creeping back into contention. A field goal with a minute left put Squalicum up by 10, and put the game away.
Squalicum’s hot start was keyed by an interception by Ja’Lique Martin on Pilchuck’s first drive of the game. The Storm also forced two fumbles.
“I thought we did some good things on defense,” Squalicum coach Nick Lucey said. “I’m happy with the improvement I saw from last week.”
