Ferndale’s boys’ basketball team fell on the wrong side of a double overtime thriller, losing 66-64 against Arlington in a Class 3A Northwest District elimination game on Friday, Feb. 20, at Arlington High School.
The Golden Eagles’ Austin Honeycutt led the game with 27 points and eight rebounds. John Weg finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and Malik Ivory added 10 points.
Ferndale overcame its late two-point deficit to force overtime and one overtime wasn’t enough to decide a winner. But in the second overtime the Golden Eagles came up short by two points to see their season end.
“We had our chances in overtime. Just didn’t cash in on things,” Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview. “One heck of a basketball game. It’s too bad we had to be the loser and not come out on top.”
Ferndale loses four seniors for next season: Brady Shearer, Dalton Neer, Malik Ivory and Dante Kelly.
“They’ll be missed,” Walton said, “they’ve been in our program for four years and our program just keeps on improving.”
In the second quarter, the Golden Eagles were outscored by Arlington 19-11 and faced an 11-point halftime deficit. In the third quarter Ferndale came out and won the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 20-11 to go into the fourth quarter down by two.
“Kids got a little tired and we missed shots we normally make,” Walton said. “Very intense loser-out game and we didn’t get our breaks at the end.”
“I’m proud of my team and their character tonight. They left it all out on the floor,” Walton said.
