The Mount Baker girls’ basketball team used a strong first quarter to earn a 62-30 Class 1A Bi-District Tournament win over Overlake on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Overlake High School.
The loser-out win advances the Mountaineers to a loser-out, winner-to-state game against Lynden Christian at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Mountlake Terrace High School.
“We went down and played the game we wanted to play,” Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. “It can be difficult when you travel.”
Ellis said the team’s been working on starting stronger, and the Mountaineers raced out to an early 16-8 lead and carried that over to a 30-14 halftime advantage.
Never miss a local story.
Emily Brandland scored a game-high 24 points to go with eight rebounds, and Emily Yost scored 22 and hauled in 11 boards.
“Both of them really rebounded hard for us,” Ellis said. “That is always a big plus when you can get boards. Yost has been playing injured the last couple weeks and she was able to get in there and battle more than she has for a while.”
The Mountaineers outscored Overlake 13-10 in the third and really put the game away with a 19-point fourth quarter.
McKenzie Yost chipped in six points, Kylee Engholm added three and Summer Millman and Emmy Cline scored two points.
Mount Baker has played Lynden Christian twice in the past two weeks. The Mountaineers lost to LC 45-37 in the regular-season finale and lost 73-33 in a district game.
