Katrina Gimmaka scored a team-high 15 points in Nooksack Valley’s girls’ basketball team’s 51-36 victory against Bothell Cedar Park Christian in a Class 1A Northwest District Tournament matchup on Friday, Feb. 13, at Bothell Cedar Park Christian High School.
The Pioneers’ Emelia Gimmaka finished with 10 points and Arlissa Oettel had 12.
Nooksack Valley started the game off with a hot opening quarter. Outscoring the Eagles 20-6 in the frame.
“We got off to a great start. Executed well and played great defense,” Nooksack Valley coach Shane Wichers said in a phone interview. “The first three quarters we held (Cedar Park Christian) to 18 points.”
Never miss a local story.
The Pioneers’ came out in its man-to-man defense, Wichers said. Not allowing Cedar Park Christian to get into its set offense by helping off on the weak side, he said.
Going into the half with a 28-12 lead, Wichers knew there was still another half of basketball to be played to secure a berth onto the bi-district tournament.
“I told them this game’s not over. If they hit a couple threes they could get back into it and we have to continue to attack them,” he said.
Cedar Park Christian did its best to fight back into the game, outscoring the Pioneers 24-21 in the second half. But the first half from Nooksack Valley proved to be enough to come out with a win.
“On offense we did a good job executing. I thought Emily and Katrina did a good job finishing around the rim and our kids did a good job getting them open,” Wichers said.
Nooksack Valley will play Mount Baker next at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Mount Vernon High School.
