Austin Brockie led the Lummi boys’ basketball team with 19 points in its 56-25 victory in the 1B Northwest District Tournament Championship game Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Lummi High School.
The Blackhawks jumped out to a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and went into the locker room with a 37-6 lead at halftime.
“Defensively we came out and did a good job at playing the passing lanes. Our guards did a good job at getting pressure,” Lummi coach Jerome Toby said in a phone interview.
Lummi mixed up its defenses throughout the game with both full-court man and zone defenses. Toby noted the players responded well and stepped up to the defensive calls made in the game.
Never miss a local story.
“We came out and we executed right from the tip off. I’m glad we set the tempo tonight with our defense. We pressured and harassed them well,” Toby said.
Trazil Lane added eight points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks for the Blackhawks. Kavarez Lane finished with 16 points.
“It was a great team effort and I’m proud of the boys for accomplishing one of our goals this season. These boys want more. We’re going to celebrate this one tonight and get back at it tomorrow,” Toby said. “It’s nice to win a district championship in our gym in front of our fans.”
After winning the district championship, Lummi will play its next game Thursday, Feb. 19, both time and opponent are to be determined.
“We’ll get back in the gym, watch game film and clean up a lot of things in the half-court offense. Also tighten up our defense. I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym and working,” Toby said.
