A second-half surge led the Squalicum boys’ basketball team to a 65-57 Northwest Conference victory over Meridian on Monday, Jan. 19, at Squalicum High School.
Damek Mitchell had 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Storm, and Darious Powell and Josiah Westbrook each had 14 points, including four 3-pointers.
Squalicum coach Dave Dickson said it wasn’t easy to beat the Trojans.
“Meridian is 0-6 in league,” Dickson said in a phone interview. “Then they are the best 0-6 team I can remember coaching against. They are a tough team.”
Never miss a local story.
Alex Martin led Meridian with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists but Dickson said Josh Vail did a good job of keeping Martin from doing any more damage.
“Josh didn’t score any points for us but made Alex work for his points,” Dickson said. “That was key for us.”
Nick Rautenberg had 12 points for Meridian and Daniel Young added six points.
Dickson said his Storm team is trying to improve each game and peak at the right time.
“Every game in this league is challenging and I thought our guys rose to the challenge tonight.” Dickson said. “We’re trying to get better, game by game. If we can play every game — getting better — we’ll be where we want to be at the end.”
Meridian hosts Ferndale at 7:15 p.m. in an NWC game on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and Squalicum will host Anacortes in a league game at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22.
