Mount Baker’s boys’ basketball team outscored Lord Tweedsmuir 19-6 in the fourth quarter to take a 61-52 win in the championship game of the 3rd Annual Blaine Holiday Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 30, in Blaine.
Colton Ranson led the Mountaineers with 22 points, 20 of those coming in the first three quarters. He contributed in other ways in the fourth.
“Ranson was the catalyst,” Mount Baker coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview. “He focused on solid defense, which was what we needed, and other guys stepped up on offense.”
Timothy Soares added 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Grant Balvanz also had 10 points. TJ Bass had six points and Keenan Gray had five points and a team-high four assists.
“We were down four going into the fourth, and we did a nice job on defense of slowing them down,” Gray said. “Offensively we had some great free throws by Balvanz, who was 4 for 4 down the stretch, and big baskets by Gray and TJ Bass.”
Baker plays again at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at home against Sultan.
