Blaine’s girls’ basketball team suffered a 59-42 loss to Granger on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Lynden Christian for the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic.
The Borderites were led by Josie Deming’s nine points, and Mandy Hayes added eight points and six rebounds.
“They’ve got good ball pressure for the most part and they man-pressed us up and down the court,” Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. “We did a good job breaking that press, but after we broke it we tried to do too much and took either not a great shot or turned it over. Defensively, we had a handful of really good possessions. We just have to play 32 minutes, and we have moments we aren’t playing at the level we need to play at, but if we can play 32 minutes we’ll be a solid team.”
Blaine had 29 turnovers to Granger’s 17.
Kiana Gray, who had two points and six rebounds, tied for the team lead in boards with Hayes. Gray’s aggressiveness crashing the boards impressed Pike.
“Mandy (Hayes) played some of her best defense in four years in the second half,” Pike added. “She was boxing out, getting rebounds and talking.”
Blaine hosts Mount Baker at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at home in Northwest Conference action.
