It took two extra periods, but Ferndale’s boy’s basketball team was able to defeat Mount Vernon 92-88 in double overtime on Monday, Dec. 29, at the Bulldog Christmas Classic in Mount Vernon.
Austin Honeycutt led the Golden Eagles with 29 points, nine rebounds and six assists. John Weg added 14 points before fouling out.
“This was the first real game of the year, so it was pretty rough, typical christmas-time game,” Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview. “I wasn’t pleased with our defense, but offensively, to score 92 is pretty good for a high school team.”
Walton was impressed with the offensive contributions of Malik Ivory (14 points, six assists), Carson Genger (13 points) and Dante Kelly (12 points).
“They were attacking the hoop, and with Genger, we got good passes to him,” Walton added.
The Golden Eagles overcame a 34-point outburst by the Bulldog’s Payton Frey.
Ferndale takes on Sedro-Woolley at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Mount Vernon for another game in the Bulldog Christmas Classic.
