Zach Roetcisoender exploded for 30 points to lead the Lynden Christian boys’ basketball team to a 64-51 win over Granger on Monday, Dec. 29, at Lynden Christian for the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic.
“Zach got in good rhythm from long- and mid-range, and we posted him up in the second half,” Lynden Christian coach Roger DeBoer said in a phone interview. “A lot of other guys missed shots so for him to pick up the slack, he did a nice job of that.”
Lynden Christian jumped out to a 26-14 lead after the first quarter and extended that to 38-21 at halftime, but in the second half Granger was able to close the gap a bit thanks to a 20-point fourth.
“I was really impressed with our transition game. That was working really well and defensively we were forcing them into a lot of bad shots,” DeBoer said. “We shot a really high percentage first quarter, which allowed us to jump to a big lead, and then we took our foot off the gas at bit and Granger did a great job clawing back into the game.”
The Lyncs outrebounded Granger 41-34 thanks to 10 boards from Jake Van Berkum, who also had eight points.
“Jake had one of his best nights of the year, especially from rebounding,” DeBoer said. “He also did a good job around the basket finishing shots.”
Jo Meppelink also had a big game with seven points, and four assists, tied for the game-high assists total with Cody Fransen who had four points.
“Fransen was in foul trouble and didn’t play a lot of minutes, so it was nice to see our depth and to get to play a lot of kids,” DeBoer said. “Jo did a fantastic job attacking the basket. He had a great all-around, floor-general night and was 3 for 4 from the field. He did a good job running the team and defending one of their top scorers.”
Lynden Christian takes on Bellevue Christian at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at home in the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic.
