Blake Mellema scored 25 points and grabbed 19 rebounds off the bench to lead Lynden Christian over Sedro-Woolley 72-61 on Monday, Dec. 22, at Lynden Christian.
Mellema’s big game helped the Lyncs overcome Jackson Price’s 25-point, six-assist game for the Cubs.
Mellema came in after Zach Roetcisoender and Koy Sterk had to leave the game due to illness, LC coach Roger DeBoer said.
“Rebounding definitely was the difference; outrebounding like we did with 17 offensive rebounds was a huge key,” DeBoer said in a phone interview of the Lyncs outrebounding Sedro-Woolley 48-34. “Mellema had 14 of his 25 in the third quarter, and we raced out to a 23-point lead and held on for dear life.”
The Lyncs also had to overcome 22 turnovers and 18 fouls to earn the win. Cody Fransen added 16 points and Jake Poag had 10 more for LC.
Lynden Christian plays Granger next at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, in the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic at home.
