The Nooksack Valley boys’ basketball team appeared to be on its way to its second win of the season before a set of unfortunate cirumstances worked against them in the final seconds.
The Pioneers led by two points with Brady Wood on the free-throw line and one second on the board. After a missed Wood free throw and a subsequent rebound, La Conner for some reason was awarded the ball after a timeout. Another second was added on the board, and a La Conner player hit a buzzer-beating 3 to hand Nooksack Valley a gut-wrenching 41-40 non-conference loss Saturday, Dec. 13, at La Conner.
“We didn’t do a very good job of earning the game,” Pioneers coach Chris Scrimsher said in a phone interview, “but at this point a win would have went a long way. We got outplayed in the second half and didn’t deserve to win, even though we should have won.”
Connor Beard led the Pioneers with 10 points, and Aaron Bosscher had eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Scrimsher said he was pleased with freshman Casey Bauman, who scored four points.
Nooksack Valley (1-4) begins Northwest Conference play next on the road against Lynden at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16.
