Drew Westford finished 2 for 5 with a walk-off home run in the first game, and 4 for 4 with a home run and two doubles in the second game to lead Ferndale’s softball team in its doubleheader sweep against Sehome on Monday, May 11, at Ferndale High School.
Lauren Maley earned both wins for the Golden Eagles. Mallory Kruzich received the loss in the first game and Carissa McDowell the loss in the second game for Sehome. Ferndale won the first game 10-7 in eight innings and the second game 8-7 in five innings.
The first game of the doubleheader had a combined seven home runs. The Mariners’ Morgan Henry hit two home runs and Maddy Bryan added another. Ferndale’s Dana Ebe hit two home runs, Abigail Bautheus hit one and Westford capped it off with the walk-off home run.
The second game, which was called in the fifth inning due to darkness, ended in another walk-off for Ferndale.
Kadence Kane went 2 for 2 with an RBI and Gabby Edison went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Golden Eagles. Sehome’s Gabby Gorosave went 2 for 2 with a double, Henry went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI and Carissa McDowell went 1 for 3 with two RBI and a stolen base.
“Sehome caught us on our heels with the home runs. They were crushing the ball,” Ferndale coach Holly Hilton said in a phone interview. “I was proud of how my team stuck with it and fought back in the later innings”
Ferndale will take on Blaine next at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Pipeline Fields. Sehome will take on Anacortes next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Daniels Field.
