Blaine needed only five innings to earn an 18-1 Northwest Conference win over Mount Baker on Tuesday, April 21, in Deming.
Borderites pitcher Anthony Ball got the win, Jonathan Starcer was 5 for 5 with five RBI and two doubles and Jalen Kortlever went 3 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Baker freshman pitcher Caleb Forbes took the loss.
“We threw two freshmen today and they battled for us,” Mountaineers coach Derek Johnson said in a phone interview. “Blaine did a good job of hitting the ball from start to finish today.”
Blaine scored six runs in the first and led 10-0 after three. Mount Baker, which was led by Kolton Zender’s 2 for 2 day, scored its only run in the fourth.
Mount Baker (1-12, 0-7 NWC) faces Ferndale next at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23. Blaine (8-7, 5-3 NWC) hosts Anacortes at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Pipeline Fields.
