Mount Baker’s softball team scored 16 runs in the third inning to take a 23-5 win in four innings over Meridian on Friday, March 20, at Meridian in a non-conference game.
Aleks Toivola earned the win in the circle for Baker, improving to 2-0. She also was 3 for 4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI.
“Toivola’s home run got it started in the first,” Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. “Tara Chambers came in and pitched, too. She gave up some runs, but did a nice job in the circle. We made a few errors behind her.”
Keana Waugh and Madeline Gray led Meridian, as they each went 2 for 3 with a run.
Never miss a local story.
“They were aggressive at the plate, even after the 16-run inning, they still came back and scored three more runs,” Meridian coach Megan Monaghan said in a phone interview of her team. “They never gave up, stayed positive and fought through it.”
Meridian hosts Lynden at 4 p.m. Monday, March 23, at home. Mount Baker hosts Nooksack Valley at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at home.
