Mount Baker girls’ wrestling placed first at the Sub-Regional Tournament to open postseason wrestling on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Bellingham.
In second place was Lynden at 176 points and Nooksack Valley was third with 150 points.
Fourteen Mountaineers will be going on to the regional championship and six made it into the finals on Saturday, Mount Baker coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview.
“We had a lot of younger girls who stepped up today, especially Shelby (Sears),” Blockley said. “Her placing second, that was great for a freshman.”
Natalie Smith (125) was Mount Baker’s lone individual champion.
Second-place finishers included Korbyn Cadle (120), Taylor VanBrocklin (135), Aniecia Camacho (145), Shelby Sears (170) and Akemi Schwinden (235).
Michelle Mata (105), Maria Torrero (100) and Rachel Nichols (145) placed third, and Gabrielle Mata (105) and Marissa Amarando (140) finished in fourth place
Esperanza Torrero (100), Ava Tarbon (190) and Teagan Manzo (115) also advanced with sixth-place finishes.
Wrestler of the tournament
Shelby Sears (170), a freshman at Mount Baker, placed second.
Esperanza Torrero (100) lost in an overtime match for sixth place, but she wrestled her heart out and left it all on the mat, Blockley said.
