Ferndale’s girls’ golf team have four golfers who will be advancing to the second day after concluding the first day of the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, May 19, at Kayak Point Golf Course.
As a team, Ferndale finished fourth in the district out of eight teams. Glacier Peak won the team 3A district championship. The individual cut on the first day of districts was set at 111.
On the first day, the Golden Eagles were led by Cienna Semsak, who finished the day with a 98. Jillian Anderson shot a 100, Maeson Mullins a 108 and Shelbi McCauley shot a 111 to just make the cut.
Annie Jane Burns shot a 113 to miss the cut by two strokes and Haizel Allen shot a 117.
“The girls played great. It’s a tough course, a very hilly course,” Ferndale coach Margie Hovde said in a phone interview. “Very different from our home course. The girls brought in some nice scores. Their swings and games have come a long way this season. They’ve worked hard to achieve this goal.”
Semsak is a co-captain for the Golden Eagles and led the team on the first day of districts. Hovde highlighted Semsak for working hard at her game all season long, along with the rest of the Ferndale team.
“Jillian (Anderson) has a great work ethic and is starting to come into her prime,” she said. “Maeson (Mullins) is showing us what she has. She started as a JV player and now look at her. Shelbi (McCauley has worked hard in the two seasons I’ve had her and we’re thrilled for her to come right in at the cut.”
The lowest score after the first day of districts was a 93, set by four different golfers: Natalie McKey from Arlington, Brenna Dullard and Megan Christy from Glacier Peak and Anna Maria Beal from Meadowdale each shared the best score.
The top 36 golfers and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead advance to the second day of districts with an opportunity to advance to the state tournament next weekend.
The second day of the 3A district tournament will begin at noon Wednesday, May 20, at Kayak Point Golf Course.
