Bellingham’s girls’ golf team will advance all six of its golfers into the second day of the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, led by Sadie Steele’s 96 on Monday, May 18, at Skagit Golf and Country Club.
The Red Raiders’ Alex Ferrier finished the first day with a score of 98. Emma Lochridge shot a 103, Erin Wood finished with a 106, Emmy McNabb 114 and Sarah Gibb added a 116.
“Bellingham made all six for the second day. That’s what we were trying to do,” Bellingham coach Brad McKay said in a phone interview. “Scores were a little high today for everybody. It felt like we weren’t playing as well, but we ended up putting ourselves in a good position for the district title.”
The Red Raiders hold three of the top eight spots in the district tournament currently.
Never miss a local story.
“We’re trying to get as many kids to the state tournament as possible,” McKay said. “That’s the main goal. I would trade having more golfers in the state tournament than winning the district championship.”
Squalicum will advance three golfers into the second day of districts tomorrow.
Maddi Atwood-Knudson finished with a second-best individual score of 93. Christina Kim shot a fourth-best 96, Jordan Flannery shot a 107, Piper Moncrieff a 128 and Karissa Weeda a 133.
“I thought it was good,” Squalicum coach Chad Herman said when asked about the team’s performance. “The greens were rolling quick. Some scores were higher than we anticipated. I thought Maddi played a really good round today. She managed to overcome some early setbacks.”
Lynden’s Jade Ming ended the day at the top of the individual scores with a score of 92.
Sehome’s Hannah Peterson led the team with a score of 102. Jiayi Xie shot a 141, Ina LaGrandeur finished with a 161, and Taylor Firmstone disqualified in the tournament.
Blaine’s Cassidy Justason shot a 123 and Brooke Griffen finished with a 130.
