Ferndale’s Daniel Jones was the top qualifier in all three sprinting events as the track and field teams competed at the Wesco 3A North Championships on Wednesday, May 13, at Oak Harbor.
Jones’s time of 11.41 seconds was the top 100 time of the day in prelims, as were his 22.48 and 49.96 in the 200 and 400 prelims, respectively.
On the girls’ side, Paige Devine was the top qualifier in the 300 hurdles prelims with a 46.65. She also had the third best time in the 100 hurdles with a 16.39, just 0.31 seconds off the top qualifier.
The handful of finals races run on Wednesday was highlighted for Ferndale by Roberto Aguilera. He took second in the 1,600 with a 4:17.19, more than five seconds faster than the third-place finisher.
Carson Genger was another top finisher in the high jump finals with a height of 5 feet, 6 inches.
Jones’s 200 time was just 0.18 seconds slower than his top time this season. His top time of 22.30 puts him at seventh in the state at Class 3A, according to Athletic.net.
He also has the fifth-best time in the classification in the 400, with the 49.96 he ran Wednesday. Marysville-Getchell’s Garrett Westover holds the fourth-best time in 3A with a 49.93, but did not compete in the 400 prelims.
The Wesco 3A North Championships continue at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Oak Harbor.
