Sehome’s girls’ tennis team earned a hard-fought 6-1 win over city rival Bellingham on Monday, March 30, at Sehome.
The Mariners swept doubles play, but the closest win came by the team of Taylor Harris and Natalie Knops in their 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win.
“After the first set I said, ‘The good news is you guys can’t play worse,’” Sehome coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. “This is only their second match together, but they’ve played doubles before and should have done better. They were playing tentative and were afraid to miss shots. That made them play defensively. They looked at me like, ‘Is she going to yell at us?’ and I said, ‘It can’t get any worse.’ I think that relaxed them. After that they were communicating better and weren’t hesitant.”
Ruby Parker got the only win for the Red Raiders, 6-4, 6-2. Giller praised her consistency in the close win.
Never miss a local story.
Sehome hits the road to play at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Blaine. Bellingham takes on Lynden at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Lynden YMCA.
