Lynden’s girls’ wrestling team earned three wins by pinfall over the Bellingham Co-op team in a 54-18 win on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Lynden.
The Lions’ Emily Gallegos pinned Lizbeth Gonzalez in 1 minute, 6 seconds in the 110-pound division, Karina Martinez pinned Vanessa Carranza in 1:53 in the 130-pound division, and Senaida Veliz pinned Mika Marishtum in 3:05 in the 145-pound weight class.
“(Senaida) had a good match. She lost to Mika before, so for her to come back and pin Mika was good for her,” Lynden coach Santos Gallegos said in a phone interview. “This is her first year as a basketball player turned wrestler, so it built her confidence. She’s learning. I think she’s starting to listen more to what the coaches are saying. You can’t really hear anything with that headgear on, but she’s learning to look up and be more aware of her surroundings. Now that she’s learned the moves, she can do them.”
Elizabeth Schjelerup of Bellingham was the co-op squad’s standout with a win by pin in 1:20.
Lynden and Bellingham are in action again at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Northwest Conference Championships at Nooksack Valley.
