Sehome’s Zach Zimmerman took first in the 195-pound division at the Cardinal Classic boys’ wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
“Zach’s big thing is he’s being more patient and staying in position with good technique,” Sehome coach Scott Schroyer said in a phone interview. “He wasn’t as wild as he normally is.”
Zimmerman pinned his way through the field in a dominant win.
Aiden Van Brink also advanced to a championship match for the Mariners, and took second in his 126-pound division.
Never miss a local story.
“Aiden made his first final, so his hard work is paying off,” Schroyer added. “He’s getting tough and getting better. He really battled and had a tough match to get to the final. He beat the No. 1 seed, which was very big.”
Van Brink took a tougher route to the final, with all decisions in his matches.
Also medalling for Sehome were Logan Franey in third at 113, Davis Canfield-Cole in fifth at 170, Larry Waters in fifth at 182 and Briley Funk in third at 285.
The Mariners took seventh in the 14-team field with 111 points. Sultan took first.
Sehome takes on Squalicum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at home.
