An abbreviated Mount Baker squad placed two wrestlers in the top five of their weight classes at the Schmunk Invite on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Warden.
Jesus Torrerro led the Moutaineers with a fourth-place finish in the 120-pound division. He scored two wins by decision in the invite.
“Jesus did a good job initiating moves,” Mount Baker coach Roger Goodwin said in a phone interview. “We’re going to continue to work on initiating moves as a team.”
Ethan Valum also placed, taking fifth in the 220-pound weight class for Baker.
“I took six kids, three sophomores, three freshmen ... in their first matches they were tenative and let the other guy wrestle them,” Goodwin said. “The step forward was that in the second match each of them came out stronger. Because we’re so young as we come back next year and the year after it we will be a stronger team coming back.”
Mount Baker takes part in a dual meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Burlington-Edison before travelling to Sultan for the Sky Valley Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10.
