Taylor Gardner’s return to action for Nooksack Valley wasn’t enough for his boys’ wrestling team to earn a win as Bellingham defeated the Pioneers 55-21 on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Nookack Valley.
Gardner earned a win by pin in 1 minute, 13 seconds in the 160-pound class.
“Taylor is ranked fourth in state and looking good,” Nooksack Valley coach Chad Parson said in a phone interview. “We’re bringing him back slowly, picking and choosing who he wrestles. He played cat and mouse with the kid until he got bored and pinned him.”
The match at 138 pounds between Riley Takemura and Michael O’Bryan was Parson’s highlight, despite the Pioneers’ O’Bryan taking a 6-0 decision loss.
“Michael stepped up and really battled,” Parson said. “He ended up losing, but we were proud he was able to wrestle at that level.”
Bellingham will participate in the SunDome Classic in Yakima on Saturday, Dec. 20, while the Pioneers join a host of other area schools at the Graham Morin Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Squalicum.
