Ten Whatcom County high school boys’ swimmers swam state-qualifying times, as did three relay teams, at the Northwest Conference Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.
Sehome qualified a relay team in each event. In the 200 medley relay the Mariners’ team swam a 1:46.83, they swam a 1-minute, 33.11-second 200 free relay, and they swam a 3:30.03 in the 400 free relay.
“I was really pleased with how our guys did,” Sehome coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. “Our depth was super strong, but the speed in our district and conference is outstanding this year. It’s going to be a fun year. There were lots of fast swims across the board, and going into winter break there are a lot putting in good times.”
Sehome took first as a team with 358 points, followed by Anacortes (297) and Bellingham (211). Squalicum (141) and Archbishop Murphy (133) rounded out the top five.
Other Whatcom County schools at the event were Lynden (seventh, 69) and Blaine (ninth, 20).
Rowan King of Squalicum qualified in two events. He won the 100 breaststroke with a state time of 1:02.54, and won the 200 IM with a 2:04.24 state time.
Bellingham’s Martin Sloley also qualified in two events. He took second in the 200 IM with a 2:05.43 and second in the 100 backstroke with a 59.17, both state times.
Sehome’s Isaiah Grambo took fourth in the 100 butterfly, but swam a state-qualifying time of 56.99 to go with his part in the qualifying 200 medley relay. Sehome’s Zach Shenkin also qualified in the 100 butterfly with a 55.58, good for second, and qualified in the 200 IM with a 2:07.45. Shenkin was on the Mariners’ qualifying 200 and 400 free relay teams.
Joe Adams of Sehome had a state-qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.52.
Despite taking sixth in the 100 butterfly, Sehome’s David Leung swam a state-qualifying 58.08.
