The Bellingham wrestling team overwhelmed a short-handed Lynden squad 63-12 on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and may have found a strong wrestler at 126 pounds in the process.
Freshman Simeon Murphy scored a pin after going 3-2 over the weekend to help the Red Raiders to the victory.
“He wrestled a tough match,” Bellingham coach Tim Hinz said in a phone interview on Wednesday, Dec. 10. “He was down 8-2, and then he turned around and pinned the kid. He wrestled real well for us.”
Hinz said he also was impressed with how two-time state qualifier Blair Bennett looked in getting a pin at 195 pounds. Also scoring pine for Bellingham were Leo Milian at 170 and Chase Poasa at 182, while Alden Roberts won a 4-3 decision at 160.
Lynden, which is still awaiting wrestlers to get enough practices after the football team’s run to last week’s 2A state championship game, got pins from Isaac Bueno at 145 pounds and Payton Peterson-Scooter at 152.
Both teams next head to the Battle of the Border on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12-13, at Blaine,.
