Sehome’s Brady Anderson defeated teammate Max Shmotolokha to advance to the boys’ tennis Class 2A Northwest District championship match Thursday, Oct. 23. Matches were played at Skagit Valley College and Bellingham Tennis Club.
Anderson, Sehome’s No. 2 for most of the season, defeated Shmotolokha, the No. 1, 6-3, 6-2. The pair could meet again in the second-place match if Shmotolokha wins twice Friday, Oct. 24, and Anderson loses the championship match. Anderson will meet Shorecrest’s Nishaant Limaye in the chamionship match after he defeated Bellingham’s Charlie Carmichael 6-3, 6-0.
“Charlie played great,” Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. “That first set was really tight, then that other kid got on a good run.”
In doubles action, Bellingham’s Nate Pearsall and Logan Schilder advanced to the championship match by defeating Sehome’s Reece Gilbert and Darren Ma 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. Pearsall and Schilder will meet a Shorecrest team that defeated Squalicum’s Drew Segren and Kevin Smiley in the semifinals.
Never miss a local story.
“Schilder and Pearsall played a tremendous match today,” Chronister said. “They served really well and played well in all phases of the game.”
In the consolation bracket, Bellingham’s Connor Thompson defeated Burlington-Edison’s Colton Saben 6-2, 7-5, and the Tigers’ Kristopher Nilsen advanced due to a default.
Dakota Davis and Ben Mulder of Lynden eliminated Sehome’s Dane Faris and Henry Han 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation bracket, while Bellingham’s Chris Nakatani and Zach Nolan defeated Liam Brownlie and Carter Nickelson of Squalicum.
“It was back and forth and nobody could establish any kind of dominance in the match at all,” Chronister said. “Both teams were a little off and sometimes that happens and you have to battle through it, and they kept fighting.”
Davis and Mulder will meet Segren and Smiley in the consolation bracket on Friday, Oct. 24, at Bellingham Tennis Club. Nakatani and Nolan will take on Gilbert and Ma on the other side of the consolation bracket.
Thompson will face Shmotolokha in singles consolation, with Carmichael and Nilsen matching up in the other consolation matchup.
