Bellingham’s boys’ tennis team won a back-and-forth matchup with Sehome 5-2 on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Sehome in a Northwest Conference matchup.
In No. 1 singles, Bellingham’s Connor Thompson scored a big comeback win over Max Shmotoloka 3-6, 7-5, 2-1 (default). Sehome’s Brady Anderson earned a quick win in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The big singles match was Austin Shenton of Bellingham against Sehome’s Reece Gilbert, Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said. Shenton rallied back from a 6-2 first-set loss to take the next two 6-3, 6-4.
“Austin’s a baseball player, but he plays some tennis, too,” Chronister said in a phone interview. “He played a brilliant match. He plays very smart for not playing much tennis.”
In doubles, Logan Schilder and Nate Pearsall earned a come-from-behind win for Bellingham at No. 1 doubles, and Chris Nakatani and Zach Nolan added another Red Raider win at No. 2. Aaron Goldfogel and William Zhang got a win for Sehome at No. 3, though. In other singles play, Bellingham’s Henry Ziels topped Darren Ma.
Bellingham plays again on Friday, Oct. 3, at Anacortes. Sehome hosts Squalicum on Friday, Oct. 3.
