Quincy Gale’s first place finish led the Bellingham girls’ cross country team to victory in a Northwest Conference meet on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Lake Padden.
The Red Raiders scored 20 points to defeeat Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley, which finished with 52 and 65 points, respectively.
Gale, a freshman, finished the 2.6-mile course in 17 minutes, 3.9 seconds to take the meet’s top position. Nooksack Valley’s Amy Murphy was second in 17:18.9.
Natalie Smith led the Mountaineers’ team with a time of 17:34.6, good for sixth place overall.
Bellingham’s Madeline Prentiss and Leah Veldhuisen had a photo finish for third place overall, as Prentiss edged Veldhuisen by 0.2 seconds with a time of 17:25.0.
Haley Rollins was second on Mount Baker’s top seven in a time of 18:00.8. Jessica Jose was Nooksack Valley’s second runner with a time of 19:27.4.
Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley will participate in the South Whidbey Invitational at 11:55 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at South Whidbey High School. Bellingham joins Squalicum and Sehome at a league meet on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Lake Padden.
