The Sehome boys’ tennis team may have a number of new faces this year, but the results sure seemed the same, as the Mariners opened with an impressive 7-0 victory over visiting Sedro-Woolley on Friday, Sept. 12.
Sehome dropped only three combined games in four singles matches and was nearly as impressive on the doubles side, where all three teams won in straight sets.
“I was really happy with everybody from start to finish,” Mariners coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. “We have a lot of new names and even more new teams, and they’ve been beating up on each other for a few weeks now, so it was nice to get out there and play somebody else. I was very happy with our first time out. We have a lot of young ones, and they didn’t get rattled.”
Max Shmotolokha, Brady Anderson and Reece Gilbert did not drop a game in their No. 1, 2 and 3 singles wins, respectively.
The match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, where Dane Faris and Henry Hahn easily claimed the first set, but had to rally from a 4-0 deficit in the second to claim a 6-2, 7-5 win.
The Mariners don’t have long to savor the season-opening win, as they host Shorewood, Shorecrest and Bellingham in the Sehome Invitational at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13.
