Ferndale’s volleyball team may be young but it got a season-opening win over Oak Harbor 25-15, 25-13, 24-26, 25-18 on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Ferndale High School.
Whitney Walker led all players with 15 kills, followed by Taryn Potter, who had nine. Abby Reid had five aces in the match.
“Playing a season opener at home, there’s always a bit of nerves,” Ferndale (1-0) coach Patti Hoelzle said in a phone interview. “I’m asking a lot of my five sophomores to play up at a fast-paced varsity level.”
Hoelzle attributes a lack of focus and some uncharacteristic mistakes to the loss of the third set, but was pleased with her squad’s ability to reset and clinch the match in the fourth.
Never miss a local story.
Ferndale plays in the Lynden Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Lynden High School.
