Western Washington University pitcher Makinlee Sellevold was credited with two victories, one as a starter and one in relief, and first baseman Emily Benson hit a seventh inning home run that proved to be a game winner as the Vikings bounced back with a pair of 5-4 wins over UC San Diego and San Francisco State in second-day action Saturday, March 28, at the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions.
WWU, 17-13 overall, moves on to bracket play Sunday after taking three of five games in pool play, all of the wins decided by one run. On Friday, the Vikings opened with a 4-3 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills, but fell 8-0 in five innings to Humboldt State and 1-0 in eight innings to Cal State East Bay.
Against UC San Diego, WWU snapped a 13-inning scoreless streak with five runs in the top of the first inning. Alicia Fine, Jordan Walley and Sellevold each had run-scoring singles and Lynsey Amundson followed with a two-run double.
Walley was 3-for-3 in the game and Taylor Clark 2-for-2.
Never miss a local story.
UC San Diego came back with single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. The Tritons got within one with a run in the seventh and had the bases loaded with just one out before Sellevold ended the contest by getting a fielder’s choice and a ground out.
Emma Schneider led UC San Diego with three hits and McKenna Clewett drove in three runs with two hits.
In a back-and-forth game versus San Francisco State, WWU led 4-3 after five innings. But the Gators tied the contest at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Following a double play in the seventh, Benson put the Vikings ahead to stay with a solo homer over the left-field fence. It was her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Sellevold (13-5), who had entered in relief in the sixth, retired all three batters she faced in the seventh.
Benson also had a run-scoring double in the third as WWU made the most of its six hits in the contest.
