Western Washington University had five NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying performances, four of them school records, as the Vikings opened their 2015 indoor track and field season on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the University of Washington Indoor Preview held at the Dempsey Indoor facility on the UW campus.
Alex Donigian bettered his own WWU marks in both the 60 meters in 6.72 seconds and 200 in 21.67. He placed fifth in both events.
Donigian was named the Outstanding Male Performer at last year’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship meet, winning the 60 and 200.
Travis Milbrandt set school and GNAC records with an 8.20 clocking in the 60 hurdles as he won his heat, and Brett Watson bettered the WWU standard by over three inches as he placed second in the long jump with a mark of 23-7 1/4.
The Vikings’ Katelyn Steen had a provisional mark in the women’s 3,000, winning her heat with a time of 9:47.97.
The WWU men are seeking a third straight GNAC title this year.
The Vikings next competition is on Jan. 30-31 at the UW Invitational.
