Western Washington University libero Samantha Hutchinson has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 14-20.
Hutchinson, a senior from University Place, averaged 8.0 digs per set (88 in 11 games) in three matches in raising her NCAA Division II national-leading average to 7.11 and increasing her career total to 2,005.
Hutchinson had 42 digs in a five-set loss to Alaska Anchorage, the most by a GNAC player since she had a career-best 45 against Seattle Pacific in 2011.
Hutchinson helped the Vikings, who also posted sweeps over Alaska Fairbanks and Simon Fraser, hold the opposition to a .115 hitting percentage. She became the fourth player in GNAC history and the second in school history to record 2,000 or more digs.
Never miss a local story.
The GNAC weekly honor was the sixth for Hutchinson in her four-year career. She earned the accolade three times last season and twice as a sophomore.
