Two first-half goals within a span of 42 seconds proved to be the difference as Western Washington University fell 3-0 at nationally ranked Cal State L.A. on Thursday afternoon at Jesse Owens Field on the CSULA campus in Los Angeles.
The contest was the season opener for both teams.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 14 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Pre-season Top 25 and the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion, scored the game’s first goal in the 35th minute as Jordan Payne took a short cross from Halil Tozar and deposited it in the left lower corner of the net.
Just 42 seconds later the same two players teamed up again, Tozar scoring on a low shot after taking a short pass from Payne.
Never miss a local story.
CSULA scored another goal in the 53rd minute, Andre Bissmark cutting back to the middle and putting in a left-footed shot off a defender.
