This is the fourth of five blogs previewing players to watch for Western Washington University's men's soccer team. WWU in its first season under Greg Brisbon went 11-4-3. The Vikings begin this season with a home opener against Seattle University on Aug. 23.
PLAYER TO WATCH:Troy McCarty (So., D/M)
2013 HIGHLIGHTS:McCarty in his freshman campaign started all 18 games for WWU. ... He had four goals and one assist. ... Was a second-team Daktronics West Region and first team Great Northwest Athletic Conference all star. ... Was a GNAC player of the week. ... Scored the game-winning goal against University of Mary on Sept. 26, 2013. BREAKDOWN: There may be no player more pivotal the Vikings' 2014-15 season than McCarty. His versatility on both the offensive and defensive end lend itself well to Brisbon's play-everywhere philosophy, and he has one more year under his belt to feel more comfortable at the D-II level. Where he may be needed more this season than last is on the offensive end where WWU lost its leading goal scorer Andrew Weishaar (10 goals, three assists) to graduation. Brisbon said where he fits McCarty this season is going to be one of his bigger focuses starting camp Monday.
