Whatcom Community College’s women’s basketball team suffered an 82-55 defeat at the hands of Umpqua in the first round of the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, March 7, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
Kortney Grattic led the Orcas with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and Kayla Tiemersma added 12 points.
“Kortney has been consistently a scorer for us this season,” WCC coach Sara Bergner said in a phone interview. “They were the team to beat going into it, and we hung with them for a half, but just kind of ran out of steam. They’re fast and physical and it showed.”
Umpqua’s scoring was fueled by its rebounding advantage, as it held a 50-34 edge on the boards. Whatcom’s Mikayla Brown did earn game-high honors in rebounding with nine, however.
Never miss a local story.
Nikki Gilbert added seven points and a game-high seven rebounds for Whatcom. She also pitched in five steals for the Orcas.
“(Gilbert) is undersized, but doesn’t play like it,” Bergner said. “She did a good job handling their point guard.”
Umpqua was led by Ashli Payne’s 32 points. Sawyer Kluge added 15 points and Anna Mumm had 12. Breannie Robinson was the team’s rebounding leader with eight, and Payne and Romanalyn Inocencio shared team-high honors in assists with five apiece.
The Orcas only committed 17 turnovers, one more than Umpqua, and committed three less fouls.
WCC falls into the consolation side of the bracket and will play Centralia at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
